Checked on 25 October 2026. Each Regional Transport Authority sets fares and revises them from time to time; the RTO's fare card is the final word.
Mumbai region fares from September 2026
| Vehicle | Minimum fare (first 1.5 km) | Each km after that |
|---|---|---|
| Auto-rickshaw | ₹27 | ₹18.22 (was ₹17.14) |
| Black-and-yellow taxi | ₹33 | ₹21.90 (was ₹20.66) |
These fares apply in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. Drivers can charge them once their meters are recalibrated, or by showing the RTO-approved fare table; they have until the end of November 2026 to recalibrate. The previous revision took effect on 1 February 2025.
Check any fare yourself
Fare = minimum fare + (distance − 1.5 km) × rate per km, rounded to the nearest rupee.
- A 5 km auto ride: ₹27 + 3.5 × ₹18.22 = about ₹91
- A 10 km taxi ride: ₹33 + 8.5 × ₹21.90 = about ₹219
Use the distance from a maps app. If the meter races far ahead of the formula on an ordinary ride, ask the driver to stop and note the vehicle number.
Night charges
In the Mumbai region, rides that start between midnight and 5 am cost 25% more than the meter shows. Check the fare card for other surcharges, such as luggage.
Pune and the rest of Maharashtra
Each region's transport authority sets its own fares, so rates in Pune, Nagpur, Nashik and elsewhere differ from Mumbai's. Ask to see the fare card, or check the local RTO's latest notice.
If the driver won't go by meter
- Ask for the meter before you set off, not at the end.
- If the driver refuses, or quotes a flat price far above the meter, note the vehicle number. A photo of the number plate is enough.
- Complain to the Regional Transport Office or the traffic police with the vehicle number, the time and the place.
Meter auto or app cab?
For short trips, a metered auto is often cheaper than an app cab, especially at peak time, when app fares can surge (in Maharashtra, up to 1.5 times the base fare). Here's how app surge pricing works. For longer trips, three people sharing one cab often pay less each than they would taking an auto alone. See how to split the fare.
